Message Edited excerpts from a local forum I'm on:

"WHY?
Race cars often use nitrogen in their tires. As a tire heats up, tire pressures increase dramatically. Fill a cold tire with air to 37 PSI, run it about 50 miles on an 80 degree day, then check it and see for yourself. Nitrogen is not affected the same way. Also having nitrogen filled tires means that you will lose less air from your tire over time due to Nitrogen molecules being larger than air molecules.

How?
It was interesting, I thought there would be something special to it, they deflated my tires, sucked remaining air out and used what looked like a normal pump to fill them with Nitrogen.

Where?
This is the badass part, Costco, and FREE. It is said that they charge members $20 for the swap, I walked right up to a young guy who seemed like he knew cars, he pulled mine right in and did it. no wait at all, no paperwork, and best of all, no cost ;) "

A reply:

"Nitrogen is cool, but its not the end all.

Race cars dont use it THAT much, in fact the odds are they dont use it for tires, but rather for the tools to get the wheels on and off ;)

Race tires are also made from a different compound that does not heat up as much as street tires. a street tire when from cool to warm can vary about 15-20 degrees, an R-comp about 10 degrees, Race slick (like i use) 5 degrees, a IRL tire.... 2 degrees (if that)."

Reply back from guy #1:

"Not the end all at all, but when is the last time you checked tire pressure? Prob fairly recent. A couple people I know with Nitrogen filled are now going into their second year at the same pressure hehe. For a street driven non tracked or performance addicted driver, thats a pretty damn good option!"

And that's all I know.
